Do-It-Yourself Home Repairs – Be Careful

How do I put this in the simplest terms to make most do-it-yourself handyman are homeowners understand that there are some things that their not going to be able to tackle by themselves. I don’t advise anyone to mess around with electrical, plumbing, heating or structural framing, if they don’t have any idea what they are working with.

There are however some do-it-yourself home repairs that you can do on your own and if you have any problems, you can always consult with a contractor or even hire at contractor to perform the difficult tasks that you can’t perform on your own, or seriously just don’t have any idea how to make the repair.

One of the most important things that I can tell a do-it-yourself home repair man is that electricity is dangerous. Plumbing pipes that leak water can do more damage than anything else I can think of to a home, besides a roof leak. Heating and air-conditioning repairs can also be difficult and some air conditioning chemicals and gases are more dangerous than electricity.

Now when it comes to structural framing, if you don’t know what you are doing, this could be the most dangerous out of any home repairs and I don’t suggest the amateur home repair man, tackle any structural repair projects. I’m not talking about electric shocks or dangerous air conditioning gases, I’m talking about removing a structural component and having a large section of the home collapse.

I’m writing this to warn people and give them a heads up. I am the person they call after the damage has been done. The do-it-yourself home repair man tried to fix it himself, spent good money and now has to pay double, because the damage they have done is more than the original damage to the home. I’m just asking you to think twice, before tackling some projects and nothing else.

Lath and Stucco Damage around Hose Bib - Home Repair Damage

If you want your Home Repairs completed in proper condition and don’t want to worry about paying for the same project twice in a short period of time follow these 3 tips. You will know the importance of getting a free bid, and written guarantee and also why it’s important to have a properly licensed and insured handyman do your repair work.

1. Ask  the handyman if they have the proper licensing and insurance to do the repair work you are wanting done. If you live in Raleigh make sure the licensing and insurance is for that area not some where else. Your contractor having the proper paperwork in this area will protect you from being liable for any injuries that might happen during the actual project.

2. Get some type of guarantee or warranty in writing for the completed work so you don’t have to worry about paying for the same repair service twice in a short amount of time. Ask for if any products being replaced or added have a manufacturer’s warranty like say a window or something like this. Also be sure you get a written guarantee for the actual work performed.

3. Make sure you get a free repair bid for your home project. Don’t pay for a quote. Any company should give a free estimate as a way of saying thank you for even considering them and giving them a call. You will probably be getting more than a couple of bids so why waste money.

Keeping these 3 quick tips in mind like getting a licensed and insured worker and getting a written guarantee will help you make a better choice on who performs your Raleigh Home Repairs or any other cities home improvement projects.

Santa Clarita Handyman Helps With Home Repairs

Home repairs in Santa Clarita are a regular event. Sometimes it can be an adventure when you plan a project around your home and decide to do it yourself. You become very excited and plan to do the project yourself. Maybe you have even torn about a wall or pulled up floors with the intention of doing the work yourself. This is very common and then the problems begin.

After the demolition is done, it is not quite as much fun to begin the actual work yourself. You probably have a regular job and the idea of coming home to a project that will take time and energy does not have the appeal it did in the beginning. You end up with a big mess and a project that is not completed for weeks or months. Your family may even become upset with you. More than likely they will give you an ultimatum to either finish the project soon or hire someone else to do it.

If your home is older is may be more difficult, time consuming and expensive to do the work than it would cost if the home were new. Eventually you will probably consider bringing someone in to at least help you with the work.

A handyman can be a good choice in this case. If you find someone who has good references and photographs or video of the work he has done recently, you may be able to work along side him and get the work done for a fraction of what it would cost to hire a general contractor. Although there are legal limits as to what a handyman can earn for each job, you may be able to break your project down into two or three small jobs that he could help with over a period of several weeks.

I have remodeled hundreds of homes since 1983. Now I just write about it. This makes it more fun to share my experiences with others.

The Monetary Benefits of Home Repairs

Owning your own home comes with a certain amount of responsibility. You are required to pay the mortgage every month, you have to pay all the bills associated with having your own home, and there is also the issue of keeping your house in good order.

Minor repairs are fairly easy to keep up with; many of them only take a few moments to do, and most people can handle this kind of small repair themselves. But what should you do when it comes to larger repairs? The rule of thumb here seems to be that the larger the repair is, the more money it will cost. It is this rule that makes some people try and avoid doing the necessary repairs for as long as they can, to avoid having to work out how to pay for them.

This is understandable, but it can put the safety of your property in danger. It can also lead to problems if you are hoping to sell your home in the near future – and it can also lead to higher fuel bills.

Windows are a common problem and often need repair. Although many properties are double glazed, many are not and this can result in heat loss if your windows are old and no longer fit properly. Although old wooden framed windows are relatively easy to maintain, it’s tempting to keep on patching them to get yet another year’s use out of them, when in fact the frames are becoming rotten and more exposed to the elements.

If the windows are particularly bad you may even end up with a gap between the frame and the wall, which can lead to cold air and rain coming in. This in turn can cause damp, which is not a welcome sight in your home.

Loft insulation is another essential if you don’t already have it. As heat rises, it can be lost through the roof of your home if you don’t take steps to stop it escaping. If you’ve ever seen a row of houses after a fall of snow, you can tell which ones have insulation and which ones don’t – the ones that do still have snow on the roof, whereas the ones that don’t have none. It just goes to show exactly how much money you could be throwing away by not taking on those essential repairs and measures that will save you money on your bills every month.

The main reason for putting off any kind of major home repair is the cost, but you can always look at the wide range of secured loans available in order to raise the cash you need. Taking on any kind of essential repair will not only add value to your home, it will also help reduce your heating bills – not to mention the cost of having to perform emergency repairs to get you through each winter.

Do-It-Yourself Home Repair: Five Essential Tips for Multi-Thumbed Men

Not particularly handy? Does the very thought of household repairs send you into a deep depression? You may suffer from MTDBS: Multi-Thumb Dysfunctional Brain Syndrome. Researchers have just recently begun to chronicle this devastating disorder, and estimate it may impact as many as ten million American men. Scientists are quick to point out that MTDBS is not the same as being a klutz. “A klutz is physically unskilled, lacking dexterity and nimbleness. A person afflicted with Multi-Thumb Dysfunctional Brain Syndrome has a brain disorder that reduces their conceptual skills to the level of a young baboon. It’s a much more serious complication,” says Dr. Gertrude Steiner, Director of Physical Capabilities Assessment Laboratories.

Effective therapies are, sadly, still years away. Scientists must first isolate the specific genes, neural pathways and synapses involved in the disability and then devise strategies to assist those who are afflicted. In the meantime, men are not without hope. Dr. Steiner recommends that men suffering from MTDBS follow these clinical guidelines when confronted with a household repair:

1. Nod and Frown. When your wife recommends a home repair, immediately begin to slowly nod your head up and down. This conveys both acceptance of her as a person and expresses your thoughtful consideration of the project she’s suggested. Next, with no more than a two or three second delay, begin to frown. If you have the facial dexterity, a frown that is more pronounced on one side is superior, as it expresses a more thoughtful posture. This frown conveys a sense of understanding that belies the underlying confusion that now grips your brain.

2. Make an affirming, though simple, statement of support, along the lines of, “Yeah,” or, “Gee, sounds good.” This sets up the initial escape phase of the project, distracting your wife with the quickness of your acquiescence. The next step is critical. Commit the Escape Phrase to memory: “Hmm, let me see what I can dig up online.” Don’t alter this phrase. It has been scientifically tested and proven. Next, take a deep breath, give a last thoughtful nod and, almost as an afterthought, softly state the Escape Phrase. Now, turn and head to your study, closing and locking the door behind you.

3. Research your heart out at home improvement self-help websites. If you become nauseated at their very sight, try doing your search utilizing only the light from a small desktop lamp. Print two copies of twenty-five or more sets of plans, ideas, sketches, drawings and supply lists. Randomly circle and highlight various sections of the first sets of plans, making builder-type notes on the pages: “Might need hammer,” “Get glue” or “Screws – cool!” Wad up the other sets of plans, fill the trashcan to overflowing and then scatter the extras on the desk and about the floor. When your wife brings in coffee she won’t say a word – it’ll be obvious you’re engaged in the serious business of weeding out the scam artists who dare call themselves craftsmen.

4. Stumble into bed well past midnight, sighing deeply with the weight of your responsibility. When your wife asks if you’ve got it figured out, tell her, “Sure. But, it’s not going to be pretty. You and the kids better spend the weekend at your moms. By Monday, it should be fine.” A note of caution is in order. Make sure the lights are out at this stage of the operation. Failure to do so may jeopardize the entire process as, under extreme duress, even the most capable of men find their customarily expressionless faces betraying them.

5. Dressed in tattered jeans and an old tee shirt, wave a hammer at your wife as she backs out of the driveway. Close the door, secure the chain and set the deadbolt. Tossing the hammer aside, move to the garage and deactivate the automatic door opener. OK, go ahead – smile as you saunter past the awaiting project, though still not quite sure what the finished product will look like. Detour through the kitchen, grabbing a cold one from the fridge as you pass, and through open the back door. “Bernie! My favorite carpenter.” Point Bernie and his crew toward the project – then, step back and watch as the miracle of craftsmanship unfolds before your witless eyes.

Is there a cure in the offing for Multi-Thumb Dysfunctional Brain Syndrome? Scientists are skeptical. They do, however, look to significantly improve the functioning of sufferers. “Our goal,” says Dr. Steiner, “is to remove the stigma of shame from men who now function at the level of young baboons.” She says early results are promising and, “If all goes well, we may one day be able to offer these poor men the hope of functioning at the cognitive level of moderately intelligent chimpanzees.” Godspeed, Dr. Steiner – Godspeed.

Plumbing Repair – Save Money on Contractors & Plumbing Jobs

When it comes to hiring contractors plumbing work can be amongst the hardest to secure, but also the most urgent to complete. Good qualified plumbers are always in great demand, and getting one at short notice can be a serious problem. Plumbing services, if they are not urgent, will need to be booked in, and you can expect to have to wait for the work to be carried out. Emergency work will obviously take priority, as the consequences of faulty plumbing can be severe.

If you are ever faced with a situation where faulty plumbing is causing water leaks, there is only one sensible course of action. That is obviously to turn off the water supply altogether, and wait for a qualified operative to come and assess the situation. This is why it is important to always know where the stop cock is located on your property. Don’t leave it until it is too late to find out. Make sure that you know how to turn off the electricity supply as well, as flooding can make electricity extremely dangerous. If you think there is risk, leave the situation to a trained professional.

There is much that individuals can do for themselves in the way of home plumbing repair. Unlike with gas appliances, there is no great requirement for professional intervention. Provided you have taken the time to learn how the plumbing system works, there is no reason why you cannot carry out a large percentage of the repairs for yourself. It is easier than ever before to get qualified instruction, as videos can be freely shared on the Internet. When it comes to home repair plumbing is one of the less frightening jobs to tackle.

It is even possible for you to carry out a home toilet repair. Information is readily available in the Internet showing you how to carry out a variety of simple repairs. A toilet which is running can waste water, leading to higher bills, so the job is best tackled as quickly as possible. A leaking toilet can obviously cause damage to other fixtures and fittings in the bathroom, and a clogged toilet is a great inconvenience. All of these are jobs which you can tackle yourself.

If you have never tackled a job such as this before, it is easy to feel a little apprehensive. Just remember that there is no serious damage which can be done. If you don’t manage to carry out the repair successfully, you can always resort to calling out a professional plumber. It shouldn’t be necessary, though, as there is plenty of detailed instruction available. Once you have carried out one repair, you will have increased confidence to tackle any others. Keep a list of everything you do, and try to find out what you would have needed to pay to have the job carried out by a professional. You will save a lot of money by not having to rely on contractors for plumbing.

Home Improvement - Hubble Repair Crew

The World Wide Web is one of the best new tools for learning how to do home repairs yourself; you can find yourself just a mouse click away from discovering valuable information and resources. You can easily visualize that a spanking new entry door would enhance your home’s curb appeal…but then you’d want to repair the crumbling sidewalk leading to it. The more you think about it, the more you realize that almost every area of the house could do with a little updating.

The first step to home maintenance and improvement is finding a designated place for your tools. You can store your tools in anything that works for you. Here are some basic tools and supplies for handing most maintenance chores, minor to moderate repairs, and some really fun and exciting do-it-yourself projects: Screwdrivers, Hammer, Wrenches, Pliers, Level, Safety glasses, Utility knife, Tape measure, Handsaw, Wood glue, Cordless power screwdriver, Cordless power drill, Circular saw, and a Jigsaw.

If you do most of your projects in a separate workroom like an area in the basement or garage, you may want not only a toolbox, but also some sort of organization system. Anything you’re working with small parts, like nuts, bolts, washers, and screws, keep them on a piece of masking tape. This will prevent them from getting lost while you’re working. Sure, you can keep your tools in a kitchen drawer, but make sure this drawer is only for your tools.

When shopping for any tool, be sure to hold it in your hand and see how it fits. How well a tool works depends more on how securely it can be gripped than on its price. Play it safe when working with glue, paint, mineral spirits, or any substance containing fumes, make sure to keep your work area well ventilated.

Home Appliance Repair and Service , Orange County

Most home owners request 2-3 estimates to compare companies, service and price when choosing a contractor to restore their log home. Contractors may offer various products and solutions such as oil based or water based stains, media blasting or power washing, full log or half log replacement. The price may greatly vary but keep in mind you are not always comparing “apples to apples”. So, where do you begin…

Below are some ideas to consider when reviewing your estimates:

Verify License and Insurance

Check References

Small Local Company Versus Large Company Based Outside of Your Area

We are associated with both large and small companies and found it is not the size of the company or how far they travel that determines the quality of work or the satisfaction of the home owner at the end of the job. We encourage you to entertain all your options and not let the size of the company weigh too heavily on your decision.

Time Frame

If you need to restore your home in the near future for a particular reason, ask when they are available to start. The time may vary due to weather conditions but most companies try to be as accurate as possible. Most restoration companies schedule months in advance. If you are interested in only a specific service such as media blasting, maintenance (light wash & top coat), or log repair they will do their best to schedule around restoration jobs in your area.

Price

Please remember, you may not be comparing identical services and products. Although you would like to spend the least amount possible, there is much more to consider. You may want to start with the details regarding the estimates:

-Are all estimates from licensed log home professionals with insurance and references?

-Do all estimates include decks, porches, railing, etc.?

-Are there log outbuildings or log garages included?

-Prep work (window covering, electrical, cable wires, etc.) included?

-Clean up (removal of debris, media and other work items) included?

-Are materials included in the estimates (stain, borate, caulk, etc.) included? -Written warranty regarding their work and your satisfaction?

Log Repair or Replacement

If your log home requires log home repair or replacement make sure all estimates are calculating the same amount of repair. Many times it is difficult to determine exactly how much decay there is until they begin, but you can get a price of what the approximate cost is per foot. Also, is the estimate for 1/2 log or full log replacement? If the log is more than 50% decayed, full log replacement is usually necessary. If the log is decayed less than 50%, the decayed area can be removed and 1/2 log used. Verify the contractor is using the same log species and log profile to match your existing structure. If you are having log repair only, most restoration companies will include staining the new logs to the best of their ability, blending the stain to best match the existing logs and caulk if necessary.

Removing the Existing Finish

There are different methods for removing the existing finish from the logs. Corn cob blasting, chemical stripping and other blasting media such as; glass or walnuts may be used. All methods have pros and cons and are effective when done correctly although either method can damage your logs when done incorrectly. Please Note: Many log professionals find what works best for them and they have years of experience mastering the technique. We encourage you to talk with each company about their specific method however, keep in mind they can be very “opinionated and passionate” about the method they use to remove the existing finish.

Log Wash

Once the old finish has been removed, verify the logs will be lightly washed. This removes the dirt, media debris, mold spores, etc.

Borate

Borate is applied to clean, dry, bare wood; therefore it can only be applied when the home is first built or after blasting. This is a fairly inexpensive, yet a very important step that we strongly suggest you take advantage of while you have the opportunity. Borate will help protect the wood from insects, fungus and decay. If you are not having the logs blasted and they are being washed, you have the option of applying Bug Juice, which is an additive to the stain to help prevent insects.

Log Home Stain

There are many quality log home finishes available. Ask the contractor what product is being quoted and investigate the particular manufacturer. Be sure the suggested number of coats will be applied and are stated in your estimate. If you are uncertain about the color choice, ask if you can receive samples prior to staining. If you plan to stain your log home yourself, it is very important to closely follow the manufacturers specifications and use the proper technique to avoid lap marks or drips.

Making Your Decision

When choosing a log home contractor, deciding on a log home finish or determining which way is best remove the existing finish, please remember there are many reputable log professionals, effective methods and quality finishes available. Review your estimate, research the methods and products and talk with the log home professionals. You should feel confident and comfortable with a full understanding regarding the details of your project prior to making your decision. You share a common goal with your contractor… restoring your log home! Most log professionals are passionate about maintaining log homes and take pride in their work. They want you to be satisfied, after all, you are their next reference!

Do-it-Yourself

We do not recommend restoring your log home yourself. However, we realize you may find the project either cost prohibitive or feel confident performing the work on your own. You may decide to have a professional do the more skill oriented tasks such as media blasting, log repair or caulking and most companies are happy to contract a portion of your project.

We wish you the best in your log home project!

Home Repair Grants and How to Qualify

There are times when your home sustains damage that makes it uninhabitable and in need of extensive repairs. While you undoubtedly are covered by homeowner’s insurance, there are some things that even your insurance policy does not cover. Or, you have not been able to keep up with maintenance costs, so you skipped doing some repairs; and what was a smaller maintenance repair becomes a major home repair. A repair may be urgent, and you may not have the funds to get it done, and this is where you may be able to use a home repair grant. These grants are distributed either by the government or by a private party, and they never need to be repaid. To receive a grant, you will have to qualify for it, and each grant has different eligibility requirements. However, if you do qualify for one, you may be able to get those long needed repairs done to your home sooner rather than later.

Grants from the Government

If you are looking for a government grant, you want to start with the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development, or HUD. They can help you find government grants that are available and explain how you may qualify. In some cases HUD will pay actually just pay for your repairs. You can find them online or through your local state resources. If you go to their website, you can actually download the applications. If you are trying to deal with repairs that were caused by a natural disaster, then the Federal Emergency Management Agency, of FEMA, is the federal agency that you would deal with. Again look online, or contact your state resources to connect with the opportunities that FEMA offers.

Grants for Seniors

If you are a senior citizen, which in this case is 55 years or older, you may qualify for a home repair grant. Frequently, those older citizens who are retired and living on a fixed income find the need to look for help to pay their home repairs. Begin by looking locally. Many cities have programs that are set up specifically to assist their senior population. Opportunities range from a single home repair grant to ongoing assistance. Check with your local and city resources to find information for your area.

Grants for the Disabled

If you are disabled, there are many programs that are available to help you with your home repair. Again, start looking locally. You will find local agencies and private parties offering grants and assistance in your area.

Private Grants

There are times when successful businesses or individuals, in an effort to give a little back to their communities, assemble home repair grants through the private sector. While you may have to do a little searching, these grants are available in many communities. Check with your local chamber of commerce or service organizations in your area. You may also find businesses that offer material and labor cost free to those qualifying for assistance with home repairs.

Do Your Research

You can do a lot of the research online to find grants that are available in your area. Sometimes all it takes is a quick Internet search to find some good grant options that may work for you when you need to repair your home.

5 Tips on How to Save Money on House Repairs

Having your very own home is everyone’s dream because it gives you the sense of accomplishment in life. Unfortunately, your dream home also brings great responsibility. When it is time to make home repairs and maintenance, you will find that home improvement can be expensive and you wish that you have rented the place instead of owning it.

In fact, not all home repairs are costly and difficult. Here are some tips on how you can save money on home repairs…

- Always maintain your house. For example, if you clean your carpet or home furniture on a regular basis, you do not have to replace them very soon. By keeping your home clean and in good functional order, you do not have to make repairs too often and can save a great deal of money in the long term.

- Learn how to make your repairs. There are some simple home repairs like changing the tap or painting the bathroom that are easy to do yourself and you do not have to hire a professional to help you. However, if you need a rewiring of your home, for instance, you definitely need a licensed electrician to do that for you.

- Shop around for the best prices for your supplies. When it comes to supplies, remember to check eBay or retailers’ websites to find good deals. It is good to compare the prices of the supplies from the various sources as they vary quite significantly.

- Get help from friends or family if you cannot make the repairs yourself. Before you engage a contractor to help, you can check around to see if any friend or family member is able to help with the repair at home. You will be amazed to find that among them, there is an expert who can do the repair equally well as the professionals.

- Before you hire a contractor for your home repairs (especially if it is a large job), you must get a few price quotations before hiring. Despite that you may have a preferred contractor whom you want to use, it is still good to find out other people’s pricing and this allows you to bargain for a lower price with your preferred contractor.
